As someone who's spent countless hours exploring Mexico City's vibrant neighborhoods in search of the most delicious eats, I can confidently say that this metropolis has evolved into one of Latin America's most exciting vegan destinations. With an incredible array of vegan options that honor Mexico's rich culinary traditions while embracing global influences.

This guide will take you through CDMX's most vegan-friendly neighborhoods, highlighting the must-visit spots in each area.

Roma Norte & Roma Sur

Roma Norte has become the epicenter of Mexico City's vegan revolution, with plant-based eateries seeming to pop up on every corner. This trendy neighborhood, with its tree-lined streets and beautiful Art Deco architecture, offers some of the city's most innovative vegan cuisine.

For a quick bite, Gatorta, specializes in creative vegan tortas and Mexican street food classics. Their torta de milanesa and salchicha (sausage) is particularly popular. They also have delicious tacos and amazing desserts including tres leches! Probably the best vegan tres leches I have found anywhere!

The best vegan tortas are at Gatorta!

Gracias Madre (Calle Varsovia 82) offers upscale vegan Mexican cuisine with a California influence. Their cashew queso fundido and jackfruit carnitas tacos are standouts, and the mezcal cocktail menu is equally impressive.

Just a few blocks away, El Mundo Restaurante (Colima 199) focuses on sustainable plant-based cuisine with global influences. Chef Rebecca Noel offers a rotating seasonal menu features locally-sourced ingredients in dishes like mushroom ceviche, jackfruit barbacoa tacos, and innovative salads with fermented plant-based cheeses. A signature dish that is a must try is their watermelon tartar. Reservations are highly recommended here.

Small plates at El Mundo Restaurante

El Mundo Restaurante has global influences when it comes to their dishes.

Taco Santo (Coahuila 169) has gained a devoted following for their inventive plant-based tacos. Their specialty is using traditional Mexican preparation methods with mushrooms, particularly their trumpet mushroom "carnitas" and oyster mushroom "chicharrón" tacos served on handmade blue corn tortillas. I highly recommend their huitlacoche quesdilla. But just note, the service here can be a bit slow as it is just two people working the restaurant.

Supercito y Tacos Veganos (or Vegangos) is a taco spot that is a must for vegan versions of classic street foods. Including tacos, tortas, gringas, tacos, flautas, and costras. A great spot for vegan desserts as well!

Chuí is a great vegetarian restaurant that has many vegan options! It focuses on wood-fired cooking and plant-based dishes. What I love about this place is its usage of mushrooms in many of its dishes. Here you can enjoy small plates such as avocado kimchi, bigger plates like paella, and even wood-fired pizza. As you walk in, it feels like you are walking through a jungle with tables in the middle of trees and bushes and as you continue to walk through, it opens up to even more dining tables with an open kitchen concept. Highly recommend reservations here if you have a large group.

Creamy mushroom pate at Chuí. I love how they have so many mushroom dishes!

Por Siempre Vegana (Manzanillo 64) is an absolute must-visit. This taqueria serves up what many locals (and myself) consider the best vegan tacos in the city. Their seitan al pastor, carved from a traditional trompo just like its meat counterpart, is a masterpiece that will make you forget you're eating plant-based. The suadero and bistek options are equally delicious (and some of my personal favorites), and don't miss their lineup of house-made salsas. A great spot for desserts as well and they even have a great breakfast menu that includes Mexican and American dishes.

LA PLANTISQUERÍA (Calle Chihuahua 207) is a vegan seafood spot that is a must! They have delicious tostadas, tacos, “shrimp” cocktails, and more. What I love is that they use mushrooms and other vegetable substitutes for their “fish”.

For a unique dining experience, go to Expendio de Maiz Sin Nombre(Av. Yucatán 84). No reservations and no menu. Just share any dietary preferences or restrictions you have and they’ll bring a dish out to you one by one until you say “stop”. It is cash only and expect a long wait as there are limited tables and seats.

Condesa

Adjacent to Roma, the leafy Condesa neighborhood offers its own stellar vegan options amid its art nouveau buildings and the beautiful Parque México.

Vegan Ramen Mei Condesa‍ ‍wasawarded world’s best vegan ramen in 2024. With four locations throughout Mexico City, they produce their noodles in their own factory as well as bring in ingredients directly from Japan.

Vegan dish option at Baldio for their tasting menu

One of the 8 dishes I had as part of the tasting menu at Baldio. They are able to accommodate vegans!

For an incredible dining experience, Baldio has to be on top of your list! Owned by the Usobiaga brothers and with chef Laura Cabrera Hernández at the helm, this spot focuses on local, organic ingredients and creative dishes. They do an incredible tasting menu that is worth experiencing and they are able to accommodate vegans. Reservations here are highly recommended.

Note: They do have an open kitchen concept. If seeing meat being prepared/cooked is bothersome, I recommend not sitting at the kitchen counter. They have plenty of tables throughout the restaurant to enjoy your meal at.

Centro Histórico

Mexico City's historic center might seem like challenging terrain for vegan dining, but hidden among the tourist spots and traditional restaurants are some excellent plant-based options.

Los Loosers began as Mexico City's first vegan delivery service and now has a charming brick-and-mortar location (Dolores 1) near Alameda Central. Their Mexican-Asian fusion dishes include remarkable vegan birria ramen and tempura cauliflower tacos that demonstrate chef Mariana Blanco's unique culinary vision.

Near the Zócalo, Veguísima (República de Brasil 44) serves simple but delicious vegan versions of classic Mexican market foods, including flautas, sopes, and gorditas, all at incredibly reasonable prices.

For something quick while sightseeing, Vegamo inside Mercado San Juan offers creative plant-based versions of traditional Mexican market foods. They're particularly known for their seitan al pastor and their hearty vegetable-packed pozole that attracts even non-vegan market visitors.

A casual spot with some incredible dishes El Mejor del Centro. Classic Mexican dishes with a fresh salad bar and prices that are pretty inexpensive. It is cash only.

Vegamo has some delicious enchiladas as well other yummy dishes to enjoy.

Located in the underpass that crosses Paseo de la Reforma at the corner of Calle Lieja, right next to the Estela de Luz monument and the entrance to Chapultepec Park is Viko Vegan Taco. A great vegan taqueria offering tacos, gringas, aguas frescas and even dessert treats!

San Ángel

Near the famous neighborhood of Coyoacán is San Ángel, which offers excellent vegan dining options.

Dishes at Na Tlali

A wide array of delicious dishes at Na Tlali.

Na Tlali (Higuera 14) celebrates traditional Oaxacan and pre-Hispanic cuisine with their innovative plant-based menu. Don't miss their tlayudas with cashew-based quesillo, tetelas filled with huitlacoche, and their seasonal offerings featuring indigenous ingredients like quelites, chapulines (made from mushrooms), and heirloom corn varieties. The make the most incredible mole as well so be sure to order a mole dish while you’re here! Reservations are highly recommended here.

Navarte Poniente

Tapas style dishes at Luvina Vegan Bar

Luvina Vegan Bar is a cocktail bar with Mexican style cocktails (including non-alcoholic options) and with a vegan food menu that is great for sharing as they have tapas style dishes as well as main dishes.

Practical Tips

  • Language: While many restaurant staff in more tourist-friendly areas speak English, having a few Spanish phrases specifically for vegan dining can be helpful. "Soy vegana/o" (I am vegan) and "Sin productos animales, por favor" (Without animal products, please) are good starting points.

  • Apps: Happy Cow is invaluable for finding vegan options throughout the city, particularly in neighborhoods not covered in this guide.

  • Street Food: While traditional street food often contains animal products, many vendors are becoming more accommodating to vegans. Look for places offering tlacoyos de haba (fava bean patties) or nopales (cactus) tacos that can be prepared without cheese.
