Tiziri Camp | A Luxury ECO Camp In The Sahara Desert That Is Vegan Friendly, Morocco
Imagine sitting cross-legged on a golden dune in the middle of the Moroccan Sahara, enjoying the campfire and drumming music under a sky so thick with stars it looked painted.
Camping in the Sahara Desert is truly a bucket list experience that everyone should experience and if you’re considering going to Morocco, it has to be a part of your itinerary. It’s a camping experience unlike anything else.
Tiziri Camp became our chosen stay for the Vegan Ventures Morocco group tour, and I can say without hesitation: it was one of the most extraordinary nights of my life and a major highlight on our tour.
A Camp Born from the Dunes
The owner of Tiziri Camp was born in the dunes to a nomadic family. Because of his deep personal connection to that land, he decided to follow his dream and build Morocco's first luxury eco desert camp. That origin story matters. This isn't a tourist product dreamed up in a boardroom — it's a labor of love from a man who grew up with the Sahara as his backyard and wanted the world to experience it responsibly.
The name "Tiziri" itself means moonlight in the Berber language — and if you've ever seen the way the moon reflects off the apricot-colored dunes of Erg Chebbi, you'll understand why that name was chosen. It is poetic and perfect.
Owned and operated by a local Berber family, the camp offers an authentic desert experience rooted in the culture, traditions, and hospitality of the indigenous people of this region. The Berber people have called North Africa home for thousands of years, and at Tiziri, their warmth, storytelling, music, and knowledge of the desert are woven into every corner of the experience. Sitting around the fire at night while the staff drums, sings, and shares stories of local Berber history isn't an add-on — it's the heart of the camp.

The First Luxury Eco Desert Camp in Erg Chebbi
Tiziri is the only Luxury ECO Desert Camp in Erg Chebbi, Morocco. Let that sink in. In a region full of desert camps competing for travelers' attention, Tiziri took a completely different road — one paved with intention, sustainability, and soul.
The team works very hard to reduce the negative impact tourism has on the environment by focusing on sustainability in the Sahara desert. And they don't just talk about it. Their eco achievements are concrete and impressive.
All the electricity and water heating at the camp comes from solar panels. Even the fridges and freezers in the camp kitchen are solar-powered. In a desert environment where the sun blazes for the vast majority of the year, this is both a practical and powerful choice. The camp essentially runs on sunshine — which, as a vegan traveler, gave me an extra layer of joy knowing our stay was leaving the lightest possible footprint.
The tents at Tiziri Camp are made from natural fabrics and non-synthetic materials, and the use of plastic throughout the camp is minimal. Even the water supply is thoughtful: the camp uses a water filtration system built with natural materials that filters and reuses water, and all the water on site is sourced from their own well — with drinking water being the sole exception.
And perhaps most touching of all: the owner, once a child of the desert himself, now supports children of desert nomads through the camp's operations — giving back to the community that shaped him.
A Vegan-Friendly Journey to the Camp
Now, let's talk about the part that is especially important to us as a vegan travel community: getting there without compromising our ethics.
Many desert camps traditionally offer camel rides as the primary mode of arrival — a beautiful concept in theory, but one that raises real concerns for animal-conscious travelers. At Tiziri Camp, you have the option to arrive by jeep instead. This is what we opted for on our Vegan Ventures group tour. Riding into the dunes in a 4WD as the sun began its descent, watching the landscape shift from dusty road to endless golden sea.
Upon arriving, we were greeted with tea as tea is a standard in Berber hospitality when they have guests.

Glamping in the Desert — With All the Comforts
Tiziri is glamping at its absolute finest.
Each beautifully styled tent is named after a Berber deity, and features huge beds with electric blankets, a central heating system, a private en-suite shower room, and cosy seating areas — all while being nestled in the heart of the Sahara. The tents are designed with natural fabrics and handcrafted furnishings for an understated luxury that feels both serene and deeply authentic.
With only eight tent accommodations in the entire camp, the experience is intimate and exclusive. In a deep desert spot, the camp sits nestled in the apricot-colored dunes, twinkling in the moonlight — and yes, it really does twinkle. The camp is lit largely by candlelight after dark, which creates an atmosphere that no Instagram filter could ever replicate.

The Food: A True Delight in the Sahara
Let me be very direct here, because I know this is what so many of you are most anxious about when considering a Sahara desert camp: the food was absolutely incredible, and they took care of us completely.
When I reached out to Tiziri in advance to let them know our group was entirely vegan, they didn't miss a beat. They were warm, enthusiastic, and genuinely accommodating — not in a "we'll figure something out" way, but in a "we've got you, here's what we'll do" way. That confidence put me at ease immediately.
Dinner was a multi-course vegan feast that drew on the rich flavors of Moroccan cuisine — aromatic tagine-style vegetables, fluffy couscous, fresh salads bursting with herbs, warm freshly baked bread, and more. All meals are home-cooked with a twist, made from fresh locally sourced ingredients and served in the softly-lit, romantic restaurant tent. Eating by candlelight with the vast desert silence pressing gently around us, surrounded by people who share our values — it was the kind of dinner you close your eyes to remember.
Breakfast was equally thoughtful. Fresh fruit, local produce, and that incredible Moroccan bread again as well as Moroccan pancakes and this was served after sunrise. Which we couldn’t see unfortunately because it had rained! Can you believe it?!

Evenings Around the Fire
After dinner, the real magic of Tiziri unfolds. Evenings filled with live Berber music around the campfire create a lively, unforgettable atmosphere. The staff — many of whom have grown up in this desert — share music, stories, and laughter in a way that feels like being welcomed into a home rather than entertained as a tourist. Looking up at a dark desert sky filled with stars is a reminder of just how vast our universe is — and somehow, sitting around that fire, our world feels beautifully small and connected.
If you are a stargazer, I beg you to pack your wonder. The Sahara sky at night, away from all light pollution, is one of the most humbling sights a human being can witness.
Plan Your Stay
Tiziri Camp is located in the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga in southern Morocco. Whether you're joining us on a future Vegan Ventures Morocco group tour or planning your own adventure, I wholeheartedly recommend making this your home for at least one — ideally two — nights in the Sahara.
Be sure to reach out to the camp directly to arrange your jeep transfer, confirm your vegan meal requirements, and ask any questions. In my experience, their team responds with the same warmth you'll find when you arrive: genuine, attentive, and full of heart.
The Sahara will change you. And Tiziri Camp will make sure you arrive there — and leave — with your values completely intact.
With love and golden dunes,
Ashley
